Abstract Objective evaluation of the image quality on ultrasound images is a comprehensive task due to the relatively low image quality compared to other imaging techniques. Additionally, because the im-age itself is the basis of diagnostic decision, it should also be the basis of evaluation of the capa-bilities of scanners. For example, ultrasound imaging of a focal lesion of low contrast against background tissue necessitates high spatial and contrast resolution resulting in non-specular re-flection, predisposing these images to degradation due to speckle. It is desirable to objectively determine the quality of ultrasound images since quantification of the quality removes the subjec-tive evaluation which can lead to varying results. The first goal of this thesis is to investigate the potential benefit of image metrics for the characteristic of quality control of ultrasound scanners |
