Abstract Overcrowding and congestion at ground surface of most modern cities have made underground tunnel construction indispensable. Besides, it is well documented that the tunneling process causes movements in the surrounding soil. These movements are transmitted to adjacent structures and may affect their structural safety. Furthermore, it is natural that buildings built on deep foundations are more susceptible. Thus, this study investigates the effect of the tunneling process on the behavior of nearby piles, pile foundation, and structures. The study accounts for the interaction between tunneling in soft soil and adjacent piled structure through 3D nonlinear FE analyses performed via the PLAXIS 3D package |
