Abstract

Kidney transplantation in children is the optimal treatment modality of end stage kidney disease, adherence after kidney transplantation play role in graft survival and improving quality of life of children and their families. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess factors affecting caregivers’ adherence to therapeutic regimens for their children after kidney transplantation. Design: A descriptive exploratory design was utilized in the current study. Setting: kidney transplantation outpatient clinic at Pediatric University Hospital El-Monira, which affiliated to Cairo University. Sample: A convenience sample of 50 caregivers of children who had kidney transplantation and attend the outpatient clinic for follow up. Tools: Caregiver structured interview sheet that consists of three parts: personal data, assessment of adherence to therapeutic regimens and factors affecting caregivers{u2018} adherence. The results: The results of the current study showed that, near three quarters of caregivers of children are mothers. Only one fifth of caregivers were adhered to all therapeutic regimens, one fifth adhered to medication and diet, less than half adhered to exercise, while more than half adhered to hygienic regimen and most of them adhered to follow up regimen of checkup. There were no statistically significant difference between caregivers, children{u2018} personal data, caregivers’ beliefs and total adherence level. Conclusion: The current study concluded that, the majority of the study{u2018} caregivers not-adhered to their children{u2018} medication and diet regimens in contrast the majority of them adhered to follow up regimen, about half of caregivers were adhered to exercise and hygiene regimens. Recommendations: The study recommends assessing the level of adherence among children{u2018} caregivers post kidney transplantation is essential to determine their actual and potential needs, health education program must be designed and implemented to maximize the adherence level
