Abstract Detailed structural design is usually carried out following the conceptual design phase. However, the detailed behavior drives the structural response when it comes to fatigue and fracture behavior and can severely impact the reliability of the structure. Therefore, the target of this thesis is to build a procedure to identify the optimum machinery foundation as part ofal optimization procedure. As a result, the procedure shall identify the most suitable structural detail for the overall structure in question considering its fatigue life while being suitable also for the conceptual design phase. The need for optimized designs in addition to saving time led to the idea of combining both the fatigue assessment using the hotspot approach and the optimization of the structure at the same time. The analysis framework will use the sub-modeling technique and link Ansys and MATLAB in a fully automated process to optimize the design of a machinery foundation of a tugboat using the particle swarm optimization algorithm. In the an overall structural design of a ship. This is a straightforward consequence to do so arising from further developments in 3D product modeling and automated numerical model creation. However, the feedback from detailed structural design at the parental level is mostly weak. Therefore, this thesis will combine the detailed structural design in terms of fatigue strength assessment of machinery foundation details critical to fatigue with the appropriate and scalable fatigue assessment methods in a framework of an overall structurpast fatigue design was after the structural design. The framework allows to design directly for a target fatigue life. The use of the sub-modeling technique and the particle swarm optimization proved to be reliable. |
