Abstract The aim of this work was to classify HIE neonates according to Sarnat staging and to determine level of protein C, protein S and antithrombin III in HIE neonates. This case-control study was carried on 70 neonates admitted in neonatal intensive care unit, Pediatrics Department, Zagazig University Hospitals. They were divided into two groups: group I included 35 neonates having Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE).group II included 35 normal neonates, served as control group. All studied neonates were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination, neurological examination by Sarnat staging, laboratory investigations (complete blood count, C-reactive protein, protein C, protein S and antithrombin III). Our results showed that cases and control group were age- and sex- matched (p >0.05) and there was no significant statistical difference between the two groups as regards the weight and the mode of delivery. Our results demonstrated also a highly significant statistical difference in the levels of protein C and protein S and antithrombin (p < 0.001) between hypoxic and normal neonates being lower in the former group.
