Abstract Two field experiments were conducted out in newly reclaimed calcareous soil at the Experimental Farm, Nubaria Station, Onion Research Department, Agricultural Research Center, Nubaria Region during the two winter seasons of 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 to study the effect of planting date on yield, quality and leaf diseases of some onion caultivars. In both seasons, the experiment was carried out using a spilt plot design with four replications. The main plots were allocated to commercial cultivars; Giza Red, Giza 6 Mohassan, Giza White and Giza 20, whereas, the three planting date; 1/11, 20/11 and 20/12 treatments were randomly distribution in sub-plots. The experimental sub-plots size was 7 m2 , each consisting of four rows, 50 cm wide and 3.5 m2 long. The cultivars transplanting were planted on both sides of the row at 10 cm spacing. The two field experiments was laid out in a split plot system in the four replications in both seasons. The main plot was allocated by onion cultivars (Giza Red, Giza 6 Mohasen, Giza White and Giza 20), while the sub plot was occupied by trasplanting dates (1st November, 20th Novmber and 20th Decmber) was in both seasons. The main results were summarized as following: - The onion cultivar Giza Red recorded the highest mean values of plant height (86.19 and 84.64 cm) followed by Giza 20 cultivar as compared with the other cultivars, while the lowest one was given with Giza White in both seasons. - Transplanting onion on the 1st of November gave the highest mean values of plant height (90.41 and 88.88 cm) followed by 20th November, the lowest one was recorded with planting on 20th December in the two seasons. - Transplanting Giza Red on 1 st November recorded the highest plant height (91.98 and 90.94 cm), while planting Giza White at 20th of December gave the shortest plants in both seasons. - Giza 20 achieved the highest mean values of number of green leaves/plant (7.80) with no significant difference with Giza Red cultivar (7.21), while the lowest value was given with Giza 6 Mohassan in the second season - In the second seasons, only 20th of November recorded the highest mean values of number of green leaves /plant, while the lowest number resulted in 20th of December. - The two cultivar of onion i.e., Giza Red or Giza 6 Mohassan on 20th of November recorded the highest number of green leaves /plant in the first and second seasons, respectively. The lowest number of green leaves /plant was obtained with Giza White + 20th December in both seasons. |
