Abstract

Nowadays, there are many types of non prescribed dietary supplements that are used for weight loss as Green coffee bean extract and Agiolax. The present work aims to compare between the effect of using Green coffee bean extract and Agiolax on the integrity of parotid salivary glands of albino rats. The study was carried out on twenty seven adult healthy male albino rats weighing about 150-200 grams. The rats were classified into three groups of 9 rats each and fed with normal laboratory diet over a period of 8 weeks. Throughout the experiment period, the rats of group I were given 5 ml of distilled water. In group II, Green coffee bean extract was given in a dose of 1 mg/100gm body weight dissolved in distilled water by oral gavage. Whereas, the rats of group III were given Agiolax in a dose of 8mg/100gm body weight dissolved in distilled water by oral gavage. After completion of the experiment, the rats were sacrificed by intraperitoneal injection of ketamine at 100 mg/kg and the parotid gland were dissected out and processed to be embedded in paraffin wax. Sections of 4-5 microns were cut and mounted on glass slides to be stained with H&E for histopathological study. For immunohistochemical examination, the paraffin sections were mounted on positively charged microscope glass slides for evaluation of apoptosis through the expression of caspas-3
