Abstract

This parallel, randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare the intensity and incidence of postoperative pain after single-visit endodontic treatment versus two-visit endodontic treatment using rotary ProTaper Next for instrumentation, in which patients were equally allocated at random to receive treatment procedures. {u2022}Fifty patients with non-vital, maxillary/mandibular anterior/premolar teeth were endodontically treated after being divided into two groups of equal number of patients each consisted of 25 patients. The patients were into two groups, group 1: (single-visit) and group 2: (two-visit). Instrumentation was done using rotary ProTaper Next files. Irrigation was done using 3 ml of 2.5% NaOCl.Postoperative pain was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) preoperatively then 6 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours and 7 days postoperatively. All demographic data, clinical and radiographic findings and Visual Analogue scale (VAS) scores obtained from the patients were statistically analyzed. Results showed no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of post-operative pain regarding age, gender, arch type, tooth type and periapical condition between the two groups. When comparing the mean of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores between the two groups, there was no statistically significant difference at all time periods between both groups.Post-operative pain showed no statistical difference between both groups at different time periods with slightly high records in both groups at 6 hours and 24 hours with slight higher tendency toward single-visit group but in both groups, pain levels declined gradually with time. There was no significant difference between single-visit and two-visit groups when comparing the incidence of different pain categories (none, mild, moderate and severe) at follow up periods (6, 12, 24 and 48 hours)
