Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of pre-operative, oral, single-dose, 600 mg clindamycin on post-operative pain in mandibular posterior teeth with symptomatic apical periodontitis in a single visit. Seventy-two participants, aged 18 years or older with no gender predilection, diagnosed with symptomatic apical periodontitis in their mandibular posterior teeth, were included. Each patient had mandibular molar or premolar, was actively experiencing pain on percussion. Patients were randomly assigned into either of these two groups: Experimental group: pre-operative, single-dose 600 mg clindamycin or control group: pre-operative placebo. After 30 minutes of receiving medication, root canal treatment was performed in a single visit. Patients were instructed to rate their pain felt after endodontic procedure in a pain diary at 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 hours and at day 7. Patients were, also, asked to write down the number of analgesic tablets taken
