Abstract During the last ten years at NCI (2006:2015), 40 cases of neurogenic tumors of the head and neck treated at department of surgical oncology, NCI, Cairo university. Patients age range from 2 to 78 years with mean age 34.7 year. Childhood neurogenic tumors account for nine cases (22.5%) only of this study. Male patients diagnosed with these tumors were 16 cases, while female patients were 24 case, with female to male ratio is 1.5:1. The presenting complaints of patients depends on the biological behavior of the tumor some of them presenting by slowly growing painless will circumscribed mobile swelling and the others by rapidly growing swelling with neurological deficit. Clinical picture and imaging studies such as CT and MRI raise suspicion of such tumor, but definitive diagnosis is obtained by tissue biopsy. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment in most of head and neck neurogenic tumors, whereas adjuvant therapy of limited benefit in some types of neurogenic tumors. The prognosis and follow up of patients of this study showed a 5-years survival rate of (60%) of malignant group. Mortality was reported in 6 cases out of 15 cases (40%) |
