Abstract Background Postoperative Cholelithiasis (CL) is a latent complication of bariatric surgery. To avoid the unnecessary morbidities associated with prophylactic cholecystectomy performed in patients with no gall bladder disease, the postoperative use of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) was advocated, as it helped prevent gallstone formation after bariatric surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in the prevention of CL after bariatric surgeries. Method This was a retrospective analysis of the prospectively collected data of 100 patients with morbid obesity who underwent any bariatric surgery. Patients were subdivided into two groups: group I, which did not receive prophylactic treatment with UDCA ; and group II, which received 500mg of UDCA therapy for 12 months after the operation. Patient{u2019}s characteristics, weight loss data, any detectable complications and incidence of CL at 6 and 12 months postoperatively were collected Results The incidence of post-bariatric surgery development of CL was 28% after 6 m. from the operation which increase to 38% after 12 m. from the operation in group I that not received UDCA therapy, on the other hand group II that received UDCA therapy developed only 8% after 6 m. from the operation with no new cases of CL at the next 6 months from the operation. The most frequent side effect from UDCA therapy detected in our patients was nausea & vomiting (10%) |
