Abstract Background: Displaced fractures of the medial malleolus should be treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).There are many options for fixation of the medial malleolus including cancellous and cortical lag screws. Materials and methods: Thisprospectivestudyinvolved20patientswithfractures of the medial malleolus, with an average age of 32.1,presentingtothe emergencydepartmentof Kasr Al-Ainy Hospitalduringtheperiod fromMay2017tillMarch2018. Patients included skeletally mature adults, of both sexes, with acute Pott’s fractures involving fracture of the medial malleolus, within three weeks of injury, whether isolated medial malleolar fracture, bimalleolar fracture, with or without syndesmotic injury. Patients excluded from the study were pediatric patients with immature skeleton, patients with contraindications to operative treatment, patients with fracture configurations requiring conservative treatment, tension-band wiring or plate fixation and patients with fractures older than three weeks from time of injury |
