Abstract Recently, the increasing demand causes the general trend to upgrade the existing power system instead of building up a new one due to environmental regulation and restrained sources. Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices play the main role in improving performance of the power system and reach optimum utilization of the existing power system without adding new transmission lines. Moreover they can be used to solve dynamic and steady state problems of the power system. This thesis determines the optimal location and size of different types of FACTS devices which are Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) and Static Var Compensator (SVC) or Static synchronous Compensator (STATCOM).The TCSC is selected to control the power flow and to ensure that no transmission lines exceed its thermal limits, while the SVC and STATCOM are selected to support system voltage. The performance and the investment cost of SATCOM and SVC are compared at different loading conditions to decide which type is most efficient. The main objectives are minimize the total active power losses, minimize the voltage deviations and minimize the investment cost of the devices considering the ordinary load flow constraints and system limits, the problem is formulated for steady-state studies |
