Abstract

The phenomenon of English borrowed words in Kuwait has recently considerably increased, driven by both linguistic and extra-linguistic factors, mainly through media, and direct contact with the different languages used by the expats (non-Arabic Speakers) living in Kuwait. Kuwaitis, especially the new generation, heavily make use of English loanwords in their daily conversation due to many reasons such as: having lots of expats in Kuwait, children are raised by non-Arab nannies, and also for prestigious reasons. This thesis investigates the semantic adaptation of English loanwords as used by Kuwaiti media (Snapchat-Instagram-Twitter). The present thesis adapts Al-Athwary’s (2016) model of analysis. The researcher follows his method in the way that social media loanwords which are used in Kuwait are analysed semantically with a critical attention to semantic change, semantic domains, lexical borrowing, and semantic extension. Results are based on quantitative and qualitative analysis that help draw conclusions of the reasons and the extent the Kuwaiti media specialists’ use of loanwords. The study concludes with the major finding that the main reason for the spread of loanwords in Kuwaiti Arabic is the presence of a large number of expatriates in Kuwait, the way of bringing up Kuwaiti children, and the love of use of English for academic, social, and prestigious purposes among Kuwaitis, especially younger generations.
