Abstract

Strawberry is one of the most important economic crops in Egypt and over the world. Now Egypt is the fifth of Strawberry world production. But Strawberry infected by several diseases caused huge economic losses. Root rot disease one of the most important disease caused by several fungi as (F. oxysporum, Rhizoctonia spp.). In this study we evaluated the efficacy of various approaches (chemical, biological physical, physiological) for controlling strawberry root rot disease.
This study was carried out during 2018 up to 2019 in the greenhouse as well as, in the Laboratories of the Plant Pathology, Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture (Saba-Basha), Alexandria University. The plant pathogen was isolated from local farm from Abo-elkhaw village, Kom hamada, Elbohiera Governorate, Egypt and identified by morphological characteristics. In addition to evaluated the effect of different treatments on linear growth inhibition of pathogenic fungi (Fusarium oxysporum) in vitro. The result showed that all treatments achieved high significant on inhibition of linear growth of (Fusarium oxysporum).
The Chitosan application at 4g/L concentration achieved the highest reduction (86.3%) of mycelial growth of the pathogenic fungus, followed by Trichoderma harzianum (85.9%) at 10 7 concentration, Jojoba oil (78.2%) at 4 ml/L concentration, Potassium phosphite (73.7%) at 4ml/L concentration, but no significant between Uniform® (Azoxystrobin, mefenoxam) at 2 ml/L concentration and Potassium silicate at 4g/L achieved (69.8%), Salicylic acid (62.1%) at 100 mg/L concentration, at the least thyme oil (13.3%) at 4 ml/L compared with untreated control.
In addition to the greenhouse experiment was performed in vivo in a complete randomized design with three replications. The greenhouse experiment had performed in the Faculty of Agriculture (Saba-Basha); Alexandria University during 2018 up to 2019 seasons under natural light and temperature conditions and the water was applied according to the plant needs and soil moisture content. Strawberry plants (Fragaria x ananassa Duch., cv. Festival) transplants obtained from Horticulture Institute, ARC, Giza. Plastic pots 20 cm diameter were sterilized by dipping in 5% formalin solution for 5 min and then left in open air till dryness. Disinfected sand soil (with 5% formalin) was distributed in plastic pots. Each pot was inoculated with 10 ml of prepared Fusarium culture suspension (107conidia/ml) after week of transplanting time then we applied each treatment by three application methods as foliar spray, soil injection and mix (foliar spray & soil injection). The result indicated that Chitosan application at 4 g/L concentration achieved the highest effect on reduce the disease incidence and disease severity as well increase the root length, chlorophyll, fresh and dry weight of strawberry plant followed by Trichoderma harzianum at 107 concentration, then Potassium phosphite at 4ml/L concentration, then Top perfect® (Jojoba oil) at 4 ml/L concentration, then Uniform® (Azoxystrobin, mefenoxam) at 2 ml/L concentration, then Potassium silicate at 4 g/L concentration, then Salicylic acid at 100 mg/L concentration the lowest treatment was Thyme oil at 4 ml/L, respectively, all treatments achieved high significant on reduce the disease incidence and disease severity as well increase the root length, chlorophyll, fresh and dry weight of strawberry plant compared with untreated control.
