Abstract Summary The aim of this study is to determine the effect of CRF disease and hemodialysis on auditory system compared to normal control persons. The current study included 50 patients with chronic renal failure on hemodialysis. Fifty healthy controls were taken, and they were age and sex matched. Both groups were subjected to detailed history taking, otologic examination, basic audiological evaluationtympanometry, acoustic reflex, pure tone audiometry, Speech audiometry brainstem auditory-evoked potentials and biochemical evaluations. This study demonstrated the following: • Hearing thresholds showed a significantly increase in hearing threshold in patients’ group regarding all the frequencies (p-values= 0.004, 0.004, 0.006, 0.006, 0.005, and 0.009) as compared with healthy controls. More obvious at high frequencies. • The prevalence of hearing impairment among CKD group in the Rt. ear was 64%, and in the Lt., was 62%, • The correlation between duration of CRF and the mean frequency was statistically significant mild positive linear correlation. • The duration of dialysis has a significant adverse effect on the hearing threshold. • All ABR absolute latencies and Interwave latencies I-III,I-Vfor CKD patients showed significantly increase compared to controls. • The results of the present study provide that CRF has an effect on hearing and various biochemical parameters. |
