Abstract

Background: Vitiligo, though a benign disease, has a great psycho-social morbidity. Its treatment represents a major dermatological challenge; therefore many efforts are exerted to introduce new treatment modalities. These modalities may act by changing certain cytokines. F2-isoprostanes are a group of bioactive prostaglandins produced by oxidative catalyzed reaction of arachidonic acid. They are considered as a reliable marker of oxidative stress and may play an important role in the pathogenesis of vitiligo. Objective: To study and verify the hypothesis of the role of prostaglandin in the pathogenesis of vitiligo and to know if there is possibility of finding newer therapy for vitiligo in the future. Patients and Methods: The study was conducted on thirty patients with non-segmental vitiligo (recruited from the Dermatology outpatient clinic, Kasr El Ainy, Faculty of Medicine,Cairo University), and thirty healthy controls fulfilling the inclusion criteria in a case-control study over a period of 7 months (January 2019-July 2019). Patients were subjected to complete medical history, detailed assessment of vitiligo and photography taking. Skin biopsies were taken from lesional and non lesional vitiliginous skin and from normal skin of controls for which PGF2Ü tissue levels were measured using ELISA
