Abstract The main goal of this research is to formulate and develop an integrated approach for pedestrian-friendly street design in general and street pedestrianization in particular; an approach that integrates the dual functions of the street; the physical function as a movement corridor that promotes walkability as well as the social function as a place for people that enhances street activities. This approach could be a threshold for guiding the process of planning, designing and operating successful pedestrian malls that could contribute in enhancing the Egyptian street life through creating an interactive, culturally and commercially vibrant walkways unique to downtown atmosphere and increasing the pedestrian priority that could create further interest in sustainable and alternative transportation modes |
