Abstract

Background: There has been a rise in violence against nurses in the workplace, which has devastating effects on both individuals and healthcare facilities. The effects of violence on nurses can extend far beyond their capacity to do their jobs. The aim of current study: “assess nurses’ perception toward workplace violence and its relation to their absenteeism”. Study design: the current design was descriptive correlational. Subjects: All nurses working at Elfkrea Hospital (no.= 180). Setting: Elfkrea Hospital. Tools: two tools; 1sttool Workplace Violence self-administration Questionnaire; 2ndtool Absenteeism Questionnaire. Results: the majority of nurses had experienced some form of violence at work. Over half of them have been told to notify their direct boss and security of any form of physical or verbal abuse, no matter how little. More than half of respondents believe workplace violence can cause absenteeism, and over seventy-five percent believe it can cause employees to leave their jobs altogether. Most respondents cited family and friends as the primary culprits, followed by over sixty-six who were patients themselves. Conclusion: The results of current study were positive weak correlation between nurses’ workplace violence and their absenteeism. Recommendations: Continues meetings with nurses to determine the causes of their workplace violence and their absenteeism by the hospital administrators.
