Abstract

Background: literature review cited that, traumatic brain injury worldwide is rising, mainly owing to injuries associated with the increased use of motor vehicles. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious public health problem in Egypt, The Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) is the most commonly used scale, and the Full Outline of Unresponsiveness (FOUR) scale is a new coma scale as an alternative to GCS in the evaluation of the level of consciousness. Aim of the study: To compare the predicted outcomes among mechanically ventilated acute Traumatic Brain Injury patients: Using Glasgow Coma Scale versus Full Outlines of Unresponsiveness. Research Design:A descriptive comparative design was used to achieve the aim of the study. Setting: the study was conducted in Intensive Care Units of Cairo University Hospitals. Subjects and Methods: A purposive sample of 124 critically adult ill patients connected to mechanical ventilators and diagnosed as having acute traumatic brain injury.Tools of data collection: Three tools were used Tool I: Assessment sheet of mechanically ventilated acute traumatic brain injury patients, Tool II: Glasgow Coma Scale, Tool III: Full Outlines of Unresponsiveness Scale. Results: The mean age of the study sample was 29.02±3.41years, 80.6 % of them were males, andmaj ority of them were diagnosed as having Road traffic accident,There was a significant statistical difference between duration/days of connection to mechanical ventilation [GCS (p{u2264}0.000) and FOUR (p{u2264}0.001)],without complications, seizure, Meningitis (p{u2264}0.000), (p{u2264}0.000) and (p{u2264}0.017) respectively, and Seizure, Brain edema, Meningitis and Cerebral hemorrhage (p{u2264}0.000)
