Abstract Background: Congenital heart defects are the most common of all congenital malformations, with a reported incidence of 6 to 8 per 1000 live births and there is a higher incidence of urinary tract anomalies in cases with congenital heart disease than that in general population.This study aims to identify the prevalence and phenotypes of congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) among cases with congenital heart diseases admitted to cardiac intensive care unit. Patients and methods: 100 children with congenital heart diseases admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit. Patients were assessed for CAKUT mainly via pelvi-abdominal ultrasonography screening to ascertain the presence of both kidneys in renal fossae without gross anomalies, along with clinical, laboratory and other imaging finding during the PICU admission. We summarized the patients’ clinical findings and imaging abnormalities. Results: Eight percent of the patient were diagnosed with CAKUT (hydronephrosis in 62.5%, renal ectopia in 25% and renal agenisis in 12.5%) among the studied population. Although there was no statistical correlation between certain types of congenital heart diseases (CHD) and certain types of CAKUT, there was a higher incidence of CAKUT among patients with cyanotic CHD (10.2%) rather than in patients with acyanotic heart CHD (5.9%) |
