Abstract

Colorectal carcinoma is one of the most common carcinomas in developed and developing countries. Adenocarcinoma subtype of CRC comprise nearly 85% of presenting cases of CRC.
Several factors influence the development of CRC such as a personal or family history of CRC or adenomatous polyps or chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Other factors include physical inactivity, obesity, high consumption of red or processed meat, smoking, and moderate-to-heavy alcohol consumption. VEGF-A and its receptors VEGFR-1 and VEGFR-2 play major roles in physiological and pathological angiogenesis, including tumor angiogenesis. VEGF-C/D and their receptor VEGFR-3 can control angiogenesis at early embryogenesis but mostly function as critical regulators of lymphangiogenesis.
The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the immunohistochemical expression of VEGF in CRC cases and its relation to clinico- pathological prognostic factors e.g., age, sex, grade, perineural invasion, lymphovascular invasion and stage.
This study was conducted at the department of Pathology of Suez Canal University Hospitaland included 52 cases that were retrieved from the archived paraffin-embedded blocks at the department with their corresponding medical records.
