Abstract

Background Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) incidence is rising globally. The need of colonoscopy for the diagnosis and follow up of IBD patients, makes it very costly and inconvenient to most of the patients. There are continued efforts to search for a less invasive substitute to endoscopy and with the discovery of microRNA involvement in the disease pathogenesis, micro RNAs have been under the spotlight as a potential diagnostic and monitoring tool. Aim of work Studying the role of miRNA 106a and miRNA 146b-5p in the diagnosis and monitoring of IBD patients Methods This is a case control study recruiting 69 IBD patients (35 ulcerative colitis and 34 Crohn{u2019}s disease) and 30 healthy controls. Careful history taking, clinical examination, routine lab workup was done. Colonoscopy and biopsies were taken to confirm diagnosis and assess disease severity. A blood sample was collected for the quantification of miRNA 106a and miRNA 146b-5p in both IBD and control using reverse transcription and real-time RT-PCR. Results Our findings showed significantly increased expression of serum miRNA 106a and miRNA 146b-5p in ulcerative colitis (UC), significantly increased expression of miRNA 146b-5p but significantly decreased expression of miRNA 106a in Crohn{u2019}s disease (CD)
