Abstract

Aim: the current study was carried out to assess and compare the effect of honey Bee venom (BV) and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) on the submandibular salivary glands of STZ- induced diabetic rats. Methodology: 60 albino rats were used in the current study. Five rats were used for BMSCs isolation and culture, five rats served as the control group, while the remaining rats were randomly distributed into five equal groups: BV group: each rat received a daily dose of 0.5 mg/kg BV intraperitoneal (IP) for four weeks, BMSCs group: each rat received a single IV dose of 1 million BMSCs/ ml, untreated diabetic group (STZ): each rat received a single IP dose of 60 mg/kg STZ, BV treated diabetic group (BV+STZ): diabetic rats received BV and BMSCs treated diabetic group (BMSCs+STZ): diabetic rats received BMSCs. After one month, all animals were sacrificed, the submandibular salivary glands were dissected and prepared for histological (H&E) staining, immunohistochemical staining to detect inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, histomorphometric analysis of iNOS as well as identification of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) gene expression using quantitative Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT- PCR). Finally, all obtained data were statistically analyzed
