Abstract

Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal diseases. It has an enormous influence on quality of life. The pathogenesis of IBS is multifactorial, heterogeneous and incompletely understood. Multiple studies have demonstrated altered intestinal microbiota in patients with IBS. Dietary habits are one of the main factors contributing to the diversity of human gut microbiota. We conducted this study to assess if there is possible relationship between food safety knowledge and practice And Irritable bowel syndrome. Methods: Present study was carried out in 370 subjects (65 IBS cases and 305 non-IBS), Food safety knowledge and practice were assessed in all subjects using an updated, reliable, and valid questionnaire and stool analysis requested to IBS cases. Results: Food safety knowledge and practice were insufficient in the whole study population; only 1.1% had sufficient knowledge grade and only 17.6% had sufficient practice grade. IBS patients had lower food safety practice score (2.98±2.43) and had higher food safety knowledge score (3.32±2.46) than non IBS patients, who had (4.49±3.15), (2.30±1.54) in the practice and knowledge, respectively, which was statistically significant
