This study deals with the Egyptian-Arab relations from 1973 to 1979. This period was filled with many historical events and is regarded as one of the most important periods in Egypt’s history. In this stage, Sadat took his most serious decision of launching war against Israel, achieving the first military victory in the modern history against Israel in October 1973. 1974 witnessed the beginning of improving the relationships between Egypt and the United States and signing the Disengagement Agreement I between Egypt and Israel. This agreement resulted in weakening the relationships between Egypt and the Arab countries until 1975 which marked the climax of their disagreement, especially after the Disengagement Agreement II. Then, Egypt began to head for peace with Israel and Sadat visited Jerusalem and signed a peace treaty. This Peace Treaty led to a collapse in the Egyptian-Arab relations: Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria and Libya, for example, stop their relations with Egypt and solidify its membership in the Arab League. The only exception was Sudan which retained its good relationships with Egypt.
This study adopts the descriptive-analytic- critical approach in tackling the political Egyptian-Arab relations with Saudi Arabia, Syria, Sudan, Iraq and Libya.
This thesis is divided into three main chapters, in addition to an introduction and a conclusion. In the introductory chapter, I dealt with the Egyptian-Arab relations from 1970 to 1973 under Sadat’s rule and how Sadat succeeded in establishing a strategy to reinforce his position and boost his relationship with the Arab counties to unify them in preparation for his war with Israel.
Chapter One tackled the nature of the Egyptian-Arab relations starting from the 1973-war and its influence on the two main forces at that time (the United States and the Soviet Union), in addition to the preparation of Egypt and the other Arab countries for war and its effect on Israel, the United States and the Soviet Union. Chapter Two demonstrated the new development in the relationship between Egypt and the Arabs from 1974 to 1976 and Egypt’s vision and aims to improving its relationship with the United States. This step marked the beginning of collision between Egypt and the Arab countries. In Chapter Three, I showed Egypt’s head for peace and its negative effects on the Egyptian-Arab relations (1977-1979), while the conclusion revealed the findings of the study in light of the documents and data collected for the study. These findings demonstrated how the Egyptian-Arab relations at that period were affected by the circumstances, events and changes which had occurred on only on the local and Arab levels, but on the international level as well.
