Abstract

Proverbs are essential in every language and culture. However, translators sometimes mistranslate them. Translators have somehow neglected the area of translating Kuwaiti Proverbs into English. Many proverbial sayings are culture-specific to the sense that they have cultural elements involved in their making. One must have a solid foundation of Arabic culture to grasp the proverb’s intended meaning. This study investigates the problems that challenge translators in translating Kuwaiti proverbs to/from English and finding the appropriate solutions by applying the Skopos theory. There are some problems that face students and staff members when they attempt to translate proverbial and culturally sensitive expressions from Kuwaiti Arabic to/from English. It also points out the most frequently used strategies for translating proverbs. The most often discovered errors include comprehension errors, giving an inaccurate meaning while translating proverbs, using partial equivalents, and paraphrasing. On the other hand, wrong lexical choice and literal translation are the most frequently detected errors when translating Kuwaiti proverbs. Finally, this study suggests solutions for improving the quality of translations of proverbs. In addition, some recommendations for further studies are suggested.
