Abstract

Background : Although several treatment strategies have been developed in the last decades, they have failed to increase the survival rate of oral squamous cell carcinoma patients due to the highly metastatic nature and high recurrence rate of this tumor. However, there is accumulating evidence that aberrant activation of NOTCH4 has an important role in tumorigenesis but it remains unclear how the Notch pathway is included in the pathogenesis of OSCC. NOTCH4 has important roles in cell cycle, including proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis, but its dysregulation has been implicated in different types of tumors. The present study aimed to investigate the association between NOTCH4 expression and clinico-pathological parameters of OSCC cases. Material and methods: Forty cases reported positive for OSCC were obtained along with the clinicopathological parameters and were prepared for immunohistochemistry with NOTCH4. Results : The findings of this study reveal that NOTCH4 expression is significantly upregulated with the poorer histological differentiation of OSCC cases, significant difference in NOTCH4 expression also was found with different sizes(T) and TNM stages, no significant difference was found with age, sex, site, recurrence, lymph node involvement, distant metastasis and PNI. Conclusion: expression of NOTCH4 is significantly directly proportional to the histological grade of the tumor which means that it could be used as a prognostic predictor of OSCC as well as a therapeutic target in oncology.
