Abstract

Objectives: comparing the efficacy of tadalafil and tamsulosin as medical expulsive therapy (MET) for distal ureteric stones.
Methods: prospective randomized comparative clinical study was performed from June 2019 to March 2021 at the urology department of the Police Hospital & Beni-Suef University Hospital. Study was performed on 166 patients who aged ≥18 years with a distal ureteric stone of 5–9 mm. Patients randomized using computer-based randomization charts equally into 83 patients (group A) treatment with tamsulosin 0.4 mg once daily or 83 patients (group B) treatment with tadalafil 10 mg once daily. Therapy was given for a maximum of 2 weeks. The stone expulsion rate, time to stone expulsion, analgesic use (NSAIDs), number of hospital visits for pain, endoscopic treatment was studied. The adverse effects of the drugs was studied by taking detailed medical and urological history, regular blood pressure measurement and by exclusion of any other causes.
Results: The stone expulsion rate was significantly higher in group B (tadalafil group) than in group A (tamsulosin group) (85.54% vs. 71.08%, P=0.02).
Conclusion: • Medical expulsive therapy (MET) is very effective in treatment lower ureteric stones < 1 cm. Tadalafil has a higher stone expulsion rate than tamsulosin for distal ureteric stones 5-9 mm
