Abstract Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to evaluate effect of hyaluronic acid versus dexamethasone on pain, trismus and swelling following impacted mandibular third molar surgery. Patients and methods: This study involved 30 patients (male and female), aged 20 to 35, in need for impacted mandibular third molar tooth extraction, selected from the outpatient’ clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Mansoura University. They were divided into three groups. group 1: who underwent the conventional technique of impacted mandibular third molar extraction as a control group. group 2: who received 1mg Dexamethasone 8th hourly for 3 days postoperatively after impacted mandibular third molar extraction. group 3: who received hyaluronic acid topically in the socket after impacted mandibular third molar extraction. All patients contributed in the study were assessed preoperatively, immediate postoperative and after 3 and 7 days postoperatively regarding pain, trismus and swelling. Results: Regarding mouth opening there was no statistically significant difference between the three groups at preoperative, immediate postoperative, 3rd day and 7th day. Regarding pain there was a statistically significant difference between the three groups with marked reduction in pain score in HA group at postoperative, 3rd day and 7th day. Regarding swelling there was no statistically significant difference between the three groups at preoperative, immediate postoperative, 3rd day and 7th day. Conclusion: Based on the results obtained from our study, we concluded that the use of hyaluronic acid after impacted mandibular third molar surgery could yield better results in controlling pain, it had a good result clinically in controlling swelling and trimus but there was no significant difference statistically. |
