Abstract

Anabasis articulata (Forssk) Moq. is related to Family Amaranthaceae which is a wild plant utilized in folk medicine to cure various diseases such as diabetes, eczema, kidney infections, fever, and headache. The family Amaranthaceae is a large family that present in different temperate regions as the tropics and cool parts. Plants of this family are used as herbal medicines or vegetables in several areas of the world.A. articulata is rich in triterpenes, saponins and phenolic compounds. Due
to these contents, different biological activities were done on the aerial parts of this plant. In this study, we aimed to focus on two parts:
Part I: Assess the anti-ulcer, cytotoxic and anti-microbial activities of A. articulata aerial parts.Part II: Perform the phytochemical investigation of A. articulata aerial parts, isolation of new compounds and structural elucidation of the isolated pure compounds by different spectral methods.Part I Biological studies on A. articulata (Forssk) Moq. methanolic extract and its fractions. This part includes three chapters.Chapter I: cytotoxic activity: It was evaluated using MTT assay. The results indicated that methylene chloride fraction was the most active fraction, which has very strong cytotoxic effect towards five tumor cell lines (HepG-2,HCT-116 , MCF-7, PC3, Hela) in comparison with 5-fluorouracil (standard) and that n-butanol fraction was the least active one. Ethyl acetate fraction showed strong cytotoxic activity towards
(HepG-2) but moderate activity towards HCT-116, MCF-7, PC3 and
Hela tumor cell lines. Methanolic extract showed strong effect towards HCT-116, HeLa,MCF-7, PC3 but moderate one towards HepG-2 tumor cell line. It was noted that A. articulata methanolic extract, methylene chloride and ethyl acetate fractions have strong cytotoxic effect on human tumor cell lines but weak effect on human normal cell lines in comparative with 5-fluorouracil, which had strong cytotoxic effect on both human tumor and normal cell lines.
