Abstract

In the present study a square shaped skin defect 1cm x 1cm was made on the back of a rat model and a collagen chitosan scaffold had been fabricated using a lyphollizer. This collagen chitosan scaffold had been characterized using a scan electron microscope (SEM), FTIR and confocal microscopy. Afterwards, the fabricated scaffold has been loaded either with bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells or extracellular vesicles.
The aim of the present work was to see whether the fabricated scaffold alone or loaded with the stem cells or the extracellular vesicles would have a positive effect on the curing time or the quality of the healed skin compared to the control group which received no treatment where the skin defect was left to heal alone.
The results of the present work reported that the fabricated scaffold alone or loaded with the mesenchymal stem cells or the extracellular vesicles decreased the healing time and had a positive effect on the healed skin compared to the control group and also showed that all treated groups showed better collagen deposition and arrangement togethter with better tensile properties in comparison to the control group.
