Abstract

The main objective of the present study is to analyze descriptively the occupational injuries and diseases in electric industrial sector in Alexandria through fwe-year period from January 1st 2013 to December 31th2017. The analysis of the records of these companies was done by reviewing the registers of occupational injuries and diseases. The source of these data was central governmental labor office of Alexandria. Results revealed 185 injuries during the studied period. Male workers were more subjected to occupational injuries, in which male workers’ total injuries were 177 cases accounting for 96% of total recorded injuries with one fatality during 2014. The most injured body part through the five-year period was lower limbs, while the lowest injured part was different organs (more than one body part). Personal fall was the predominant cause of occupational injuries. Data of crude rate among the companies varied, and the Egyptian plastic and electric industrial company had the highest crude rate with 93 (injured workers/1000 workers), the same company had the highest repetitive rate as well. Whereas the highest severity rate (801.9 days off work/ million hours) was recorded in Sidi-Krir electricity transmission (west delta general). There were no reported cases with occupational diseases among the targeted companies. Introducing governmental programs including safety campaigns, improving reporting procedures for occupational injuries and diseases inside each company and regular training of workers were considered as the key elements to improve health and safety inside electricity industry sector of Alexandria.
