Abstract Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that interferes with a person’s ability to think clearly, manage emotions, make decisions and relate to others.TheAIM was to investigate the relation between the hope level of patients with schizophrenia and functional recovery. SUBJECTS ANDMETHOD: Design:The study used a descriptive correlational research design. Setting: The study was conducted on psychiatric in patient unit at Port Said Psychiatric Health Hospital. Subjects:The study subjects comprised of a convenience sample with total number of 126 schizophrenic patientsTools: Tool I: The Herth Hope Index (HHI); Tool II: The Functional Remission of General Schizophrenia Scale, it is a 19 items clinician-based questionnaire,in addition to demographic and clinical data sheet. RESULTS:There was a statistically significant relation between hope level and onset of treatment, number ofprevious psychiatric hospitalization. Hope was found to be significantly associated with gender, age, and family income. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between hope and functional remission. CONCLUSION: Thestudy concluded that most of studied patients have high level of hope and functional recovery. In addition, it was found that there is a significant positive correlation between the total score of hope level of patients with schizophrenia and total score of functional recovery.RECOMMEDATION: The study recommended thathope-instilling programs and psychological counseling services should be given to patients with schizophrenia. Moreover,social skills training programs should be organized for schizophrenic patients and cooperation should be carried out with other institutions and organizations to enhance their levels of professional functioning. |
