Abstract

Buildings have major impact on energy consumption. Several factors govern energy efficiency. The present study aims to investigate the influence of window area, glazing properties and shading overhang on energy consumption in two smart buildings under different climatic conditions, taking into account thermal and visual comfort.
Objective optimizations is carried out using four objective functions, namely, annual cooling, heating, annual lighting and annual total energy consumption, to obtain the optimal design for minimum total consumption.
The energy consumption values used in the statistical calculations are estimated via thermal and lighting loads simulations conducted using EnergyPlus. Then the results from the simulation system are used to train a Surrogate mathematical model (artificial neural networks). The significance of each factor is studied separately to indicate which of them most influences the energy consumption, and then the genetic algorithms method is used to determine the values of these factors to reach the optimal design.
The results showed that window area and thermal and optical properties of glass are the most influencing energy consumption of smart buildings. The climate change factor also played a major role in the total energy consumption.
