Abstract

The present study aims to study CAUTI among males admitted to Assiut University Hospitals in Urology Department for host characteristics, causative pathogens and susceptibility to quinolone antibiotics, with investigating the role of Lactic acid bacteria supernatants and metal ion competition in eliminating Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella species urinary biofilms. Klebsiella spp. represents (44.9%) of 127 isolates from the 100 studied cases followed by Ps. aeruginosa (18.1%), Escherichia coli (17.3%), Enerococcus fecalis (14.2%), Protues mirabilis (3.1%) and Staphylococcus aureus (2.4%).
Quinolone-resistant strains were 39, isolated from 30 patients and they were Klebsiella spp. (46.2%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (23.1%), Escherichia coli (17.9%) and Enterococcus fecalis (12.8%). Both cell frees supernatant and metal ion competition showed a remarkable ability to reduce the urinary biofilm formation by the uropathogens as concluded by applying microtiter plate assay and flow cytometry techniques.
