Abstract The massive increase in HAIs caused by MDR pathogens belonging to coliform bacilli, especially E. coli and K. pneumoniae, poses a great alarm globally. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of these pathogens against a wide range of antimicrobial agents becomes necessary; consequently, healthcare providers can immediately find proper treatment regimens to their patients. Although phenotypic testing remains the gold standard method for guiding antimicrobial treatment decisions, to some extent, it is time consuming. So recent advances in automating provide promising solutions for rapid bacterial identification and antibiogram profiling, such as VITEK 2 system, and help decreasing spread of resistance and appropriate and prompt implementation of infection prevention and control programs. |
