Abstract Dry eye has been reported as sequelae of LASIK. Quality and quantity of tear film are considered valuable parameters for the diagnosis of dry eye disease. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) have been introduced to evaluate tear film parameters, It is considered a noninvasive approach to produce a tear meniscus image and a potential tool to diagnose dry eye after LASIK. This prospective study was performed by Anterior segment OCT system (RTVue-100; Optovue Inc., Fremont, CA, USA) on 50 subjects who undergo LASIK procedure for evaluation of tear menisci parameters. These subjects were further divided into two groups, first group was (25 subjects) with supplementation of Omega-3 fatty acids for 1 week pre-operative and continued for a month post-operative, the age of this studied patient with omega 3 administration ranged from 19 to 45 years old, 80% of the studied groups were female and 20% were male and a second group (25 subject) without Omega-3 supplement , the age of this studied patient ranged from 19 to 48 years old, About 2/3 (60%) of the studied group were female and 40% were male. Examination by Anterior segment OCT done to measure Tear Meniscus Height (TMH), Tear Meniscus Depth (TMD), and Tear Meniscus Area (TMA) before and after LASIK for all cases with follow up 1’st day, 1’st week and 1’st month for the evaluation of Upper and Lower Tear Menisci values. This study has found that Upper and lower Tear Meniscus parameters higher in omega 3 treated group than control group at Pre - operative to 1 day, 1 week and 1-month Post-operative. In general, the Upper tear meniscus parameters were statistically lower than lower Tear Meniscus parameters. It was also shown that the upper and lower tear menisci were decreased up to 1 month after LASIK. By comparison these results with anther studies found that these results are consistent with the others. finally, Optical coherence tomography is a useful tool for evaluating of the tear film in patients with LASIK. Omega-3 FA supplementation improves dry eye post LASIK symptoms, tear film stability, and tear production. |
