Abstract Aim of the study: This study evaluates the effect of the subgingival application Of Azithromycin 0.5% gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planning (SRP) in moderate chronic periodontitis. Patients and methods: Thirty participants were involved in this study. Twenty subjects with moderate chronic periodontitis as study cases and other ten healthy subjects were introduced in the study as a negative control group. A split-mouth randomized clinical study was conducted in 20 patients with moderate chronic periodontitis receiving scaling and root planning alone in randomly selected quadrants and scaling and root planning associated with the subgingival application of Azithromycin 0.5% gel in the other quadrants. Periodontal Clinical parameters, GCF sample were performed at baseline, after 3weeks and 6 weeks after treatment for all periodontitis patients .GCF Samples were cultured anaerobically for detection of p.gingivalis and p.intermedia Results: Both therapies resulted in significant improvements. In the present study, there were highly statistically significant clinical improvements in all measured clinical parameters in study sites which received SRP and 0.5% Azithromycin gel more than that achieved within positive control group. there is also higher significant reduction in the bacterial count when compared to the results of scaling and root planning alone. Conclusion: Although both treatment strategies seemed to benefit the patients, the adjunctive use of 0.5% AZM as a controlled drug‐delivery system enhanced the clinical and microbiologic results as shown by the intergroup comparison. |
