Abstract Optimization of drilling parameters during drilling operations aims to optimize weight on bit, bit rotation speed, mud flow rate for obtaining the maximum drilling efficiency as well as minimizing the drilling cost by reducing NPT, failure and improve drilling rate. The directional and horizontal wells are the most demanding to this kind of optimization service due to a lot of problems and challenges that face this kind of well profiles also the highly cost which paid in using very advanced drilling tools like Rotary Steerable System and Logging while drilling. In this thesis presents the role of drilling optimization in avoiding many directional and horizontal wells problems. These problems include wellbore instability, hole cleaning, tool failure and loss of circulation. The purposes of this study include: (1) giving a brief account about directional and horizontal wells problems and the role of drilling optimization, (2) detailed explanation of the drilling optimization procedures in directional and horizontal wells, (3) showing field case studies of drilling optimization and introduce the value of drilling optimization during drilling. The optimization in this study will focus on minimum flow rate, the equivalent circulation density modeling and its behavior while drilling, Torque and drag relation between drill string and wellbore contact by modeling and vibrations. Results of this research to present the optimization parameters of case studies by using optimization process and showed the implement of optimization process through these cases. |
