Abstract One of the main problems which faces the designer that; there are several methods available for the selection of the best wastewater treatment technology but these methods had a lot variables that may be not available to get them in the beginning of the design which minimize its possibility for application, the Egyptian Code doesn’t contain a certain method used for selection the type of appropriate Treatment. So, most of the designers don’t study the selection procedure, they just apply the available technology they used before or choosing the well-known type of treatment without applying the engineering parameter and this selection could be unsuitable, which may cause wasted money, problems in operation and maintenance and reduction the quality of treated wastewater. The major goal of this research is to determine a suitable selection methodology easy to apply, can be used for selection the most appropriate wastewater treatment technology according to the chosen governed conditions. The methodology will apply on biological treatment, and five secondary treatment processes were taken for this purpose. The selected treatment technologies that were taken for examination and assessment are Conventional Activated sludge, Trickling filter, combined system, Oxidation pond & Extended aeration that mostly used in Egypt. The governed parameters in this study are population, characteristics of raw sewage (BODCOD -TSS), Site conditions (required area –type of soil), characteristics of treated sewage (BOD- COD -TSS) and Cost (Construction cost, Running cost & maintenance cost) A study procedure is proposed to select the optimum wastewater treatment technology. The procedure is carried out in two parts technical and financial evaluation. The technical evaluation is developed to choose the acceptable treatment technology that can be used for a certain governed condition, as population, characteristics of raw sewage. Financial evaluation is resulting by using financial diagram which conducted among acceptable treatment technologies, taking into consideration construction cost, running cost & maintenance cost. The proposed procedure has been applied on five existing plants as case studies after the evaluation; comparison between study procedure result and the applied technology in the site is carried out. This resulted that several sites could use more efficient and cheaper methods if their designers used the developed study procedure for technology choice. |
