Abstract

Postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal mortality. Although maternal mortality rates have declined greatly in the developed world. Postpartum hemorrhage remains a leading cause of maternal mortality elsewhere.
The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and side effects of a sublingual 400 ug misoprostol to 10 Iu of oxytocin administrated via intramascular route in reduction of postdelivery blood loss.
Grouping: 120 women included in this study were randomly divided into two groups:
group A ( The misoprostol group): It includes 60 patients, they will receive 400 ug misoprostol sublingually
group B ( The oxytocin group): It includes 60 patients, they will receive 10 iu of oxytocin intramuscular
We compared the two groups using computer programs to evaluate the safety and efficacy of each drug:
• There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding the estimated blood loss. The mean of the estimated blood loss in oxytocin group(317.58) & in misoprostol group(301.92), p value =0.50
• Regarding maternal adverse effects, there is significantly higher incidence of shivering in the misoprostol group than the oxytocin group.
Otherwise there was no other significant difference between the two groups regarding the DROP in HB and HCT pre and 24 hours post delivery, HB and HCT values, or the need for additional uterotonic drugs.
