Abstract The primary goal of water treatment plants is the production of biologically and chemically safe water. Therefore, water treatment techniques are generally based on multisteps and different processes such as coagulation-flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection. The disinfection aims to kill or inactivate pathogens and control water born disease. Chlorine is the most widely used and very effective disinfectant and the disadvantages of chlorine are mainly related to the disinfection by-products (DBPs) and the toxicity of chlorine gas. Therefore, the objective of this study is mainly based and devoted to improve the quality of drinking water (intake raw water) by using potassium permanganate as a promising disinfectant in the pretreatment process as an alternative’to replace chlorine in water treatment plants. In addition, the minimization of chlorine usage in the pretreatment process and enhancing the performance of the coagulation and filtration steps are also aimed. The following chemical and biological parameters are aimed to evaluate in this study by using collected intake raw water samples from El-Nozha warer treatment plant. • Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) • Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) • Sulfate • Phosphate • Total dissolved solids( TDS) • Heterotrophic plate count (HPC) • Total coliform (TC) • Fecal coliform (FC) • Total algal count(TGC) |
