Abstract

ackground: Observational studies of children with ADHD and their parents found conflicted parent–child interaction patterns and less positive parenting practice. There is ample correlational evidence to suggest that this disruption in the normal parenting process may adversely affect parental functioning in many ways. For example, studies have shown that parents of children with ADHD commonly experience considerable stress in their parenting roles. In recent years quality of life (QOL) has emerged as an important outcome measure in guiding health care. In relation to the treatment of children with ADHD, Pharmacotherapy alone often does not sufficiently address these problems. Behavioral parent training (BPT) is an intervention to help parents stop stressful patterns of parent–child interaction.
Aim of the Work To evaluate the relationship between ADHD, and its severity on parenting stress, and QOL of the mother. As well as to assess the effect of Barkley’s Parent Training Program on parenting stress, and QOL in mothers of children with ADHD and on the severity of ADHD in their children.
Patients and Methods: This is a Prospective interventional study conducted in Ain Shams University hospitals. This present study aimed at analyzing the data of 30 children with a diagnosis of ADHD according to and then they will undergo World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief WHOQOL-BREF, Parenting Stress Index (PSI), Weiss Symptom Record (WSR), Weiss Functional Impairment Rating Scale-Parent Form (WFIRS-P), The Arabic version of Conners’ Parent Rating Scale (for the severity of the symptoms) before and behavioral parent training done through weekly based sessions over 8 weeks over a period from June 2019 to February 2020.
Results: A total of 30 ADHD children, 19 (63.3%) males, and 11 (36.7%) females. Child domain total mean score decreased from (152.23±14.68) to (148.93±15.14). Parent domain total mean score decreased from (121.57±12.38) to (116.57±12.57). total score of the parenting stress index decreased from (273.80± 22.83) to (265.50± 23.75) after the behavioral parent training. The mean of Psychological domain score increased from (12.47±1.57) to (13.27±1.78). The mean score of Total mean score decreased from (1.25±0.33) to (1.16 ±0.34). The mean score of Hyperactive Subscale of CPRS scores decreased from (74.93±10.17) to (73.97±10.20) while the mean score of Inattentive Subscale of CPRS scores decreased from (73.07 ± 4.62) to (72.63 ± 4.72).
Conclusion: This study highlighted the distress experienced by the mother of children diagnosed by ADHD and the importance of augmenting psychosocial intervention in managing ADHD children. Behavioral parent training has been efficacious in reducing the parenting stress and improving the quality of life in mother of ADHD children. Furthermore, severity of ADHD symptoms and the associated symptoms together with the functional impairment of the children had significantly decreased after finishing the parent training. Further research is required to examine long term effect of the parent training program and the sustainability of these results.
