Abstract

ABSTRACT
Background: Lidocaine infusion administered as an analgesic within outpatient hysteroscopy clinics however have rare serious clinically undesired sequlae and there is inadequate research based evidence concerning sublingual piroxicam effectiveness and safety profile in outpatient hysteroscopy practice . the current research investigates in an analytical comparative manner the clinical sequlae and effectiveness of both agents in outpatient hysterosocopy practice .
Aim : To assess and compare the efficacy, safety and patient’s satisfaction of sublingual piroxicam and intrauterine lidocaine infusion in relief ᴏf pain correlated to outpatient hysteroscopic procedure .
Methodology : It is a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of lidocaine infusion versus sublingual piroxicam as an analgesic in outpatient hysteroscopy. This research was conducted at Ain Shams Maternity Hospital (Early Cancer Detection Unit),over a period of 6 months from March 2019 to November 2019.
Results: Regarding the adverse reactions, none of the patients in either group had severe medication related adverse effects. Also there is no statistically significant difference between the 2 groups according to age, BMI and preliminary diagnosis. Mostly, the duration of the procedure was equal in both groups. There ԝere significant difference in pain perception between patients in the piroxicam group and patients in the lidocaine group during the procedure (pain was lower in the piroxicam group). To sum up, there ԝas little reduction in pain perception and experiencing severe pain in both groups but favoring the piroxicam group over lidocaine group.
Conclusion: The usage of piroxicam and lidocaine are associated with less pain during the procedure. Sublingual piroxicam 20 mg tablet one hour before outpatient hysteroscopy is safer and more effective in pain control during the procedure in comparison to intrauterine lidocaine infusion with the distension medium used.
