Abstract
PF is the most common cause of plantar heel pain. The patient usually presents with gradual onset of pain over the medial side of the plantar heel that is most noticeable in the first few steps in the morning or after a period of prolonged rest. PRP is derived from autologous blood and contains growth factors in high concentrations. It has been found to have promising effects in the treatment of PF when other treatment measures failed. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of PRP injection in patients with chronic PF. The present study was conducted on 65 patients with chronic PF. Patients were recruited from foot and ankle Outpatient Clinic at Mansoura University Hospital and injected with 3 ml PRP. In our study, there was significant improvement of pain measured by VAS scale and function measured by modified criteria of Roles and Maudsley at 1.5, 3 and 6 months after injection compared to baseline. No complications or side effects occurred in any patient. We concluded that administration of PRP in chronic PF treatment appears to be an effective method which provides better reduction of pain and better functional results than other options like steroid injection or ESWT especially in long term periods. It is safer option for patients who have contraindications to steroid therapy as diabetics and a good option for patients who are considered for surgical intervention, so PRP provides an effective minimally invasive treatment method with low cost for chronic plantar fasciitis avoiding the side effects of surgery and other conservative modalities.
