Abstract Cupressaceae (Cypress family) is one of the predominant families of conifers which distributed widely. The family contains about 70 genera with about 130-142 species. One ofthe important genera are Juniperus, Thuja, Platycladus, Calocedrus, Cupressus and Chamaecyparis (Judicibus, 2011). Juniperus is one of the most diverse genera of conifers, it consists of about 75 species divided into three sections; section Caryocedrus, Juniperus and Sabina. Juniperus sections include 14 species, while Thuja is a genus of evergreen monoecious coniferous trees that belong to family Cupressaceae. Due to morphological and embryological issues Thuja was separated from this genus and now it is called Platycladus, also Platycladus is distantly related to Thuja, as there are many differences, such as its distinct cones, wingless seeds, and its almost scentless foliage. |
