Abstract

This study will provide an insight towards levels of iron and zinc deficiency that are influencing motor development and effect of zinc deficiency on both anemia and iron deficiency anemia of pre scoolers in der gbl el-tair village.
The use of a standardized serum iron and zinc in this study will allow for comparison with findings from other studies. Data from this study will also be useful in developing future intervention programs.
-The present study aimed to assess the magnitude of serum iron and zinc levels among infants and children aged (6 months- 5 years) in der gbl elptair village ,estimate iron and zinc deficiency in relation to artificial feeding and motor development among this age group.
Results:
-Complete data were available for 400 children included in the study which entered into statistical analysis and this study analysis showed that studied children aged ranged between 6 to 60 months with mean of 35.5 ± 15.5 month , 188 (47%) were females and 212 (53%) were males, their weight ranged between 5 and 23 kilograms with mean 13.6± 3.2 kilograms, their length/height ranged between 66 and 113 centimeters with mean of 92± 46.2 centimeters.
209 (52%) were breast fed while 191(48%) were artificial and combined fed, from 400 children (56.5%) were anemic while iron deficiency anemia represent (23%) of total number of children.283(70.75%) were zinc deficient,153(54%) were males while 130(46%) were females.About 18% of them have combined iron and zinc deficiency.53.5% were males while 46.5% were females.
The current study showed negative insignificant correlation between zinc and iron (r = 0.03 , p = 0.5 ) , while show positive insignificant correlation between zinc and ferritin, also showed that serum iron level is significantly higher in those with normal motor development than children with delayed motor development , while there is no significant difference in relation to breast feeding.
The current study also showed that there is no significant difference in the level of zinc in relation to motor development and breast feeding.
