Abstract

ndergraduate students who are using social media have been
grown exponentially to the extent of addiction. This
addiction is facilitated by the numerous active social media
sites, the popularity of smartphones and the easy access to the internet.
The self-presentational nature of social media allowing students to
create an inflated, grandiose self-image those enhance and promotes
narcissistic trait. They also used social media as a substitute for face to
face communication, resulting in unvalued relationship, reduction in the
size of student’s social circle and then the result is social isolation.
The present study aimed to determine the effect of social media
addiction on occurrence of narcissism and social isolation among Tanta
University students. This study followed descriptive design and it was
conducted at faculties of Tanta University. The study subjects were
1600 undergraduate student were selected by multistage stratified
cluster sampling.
The data of the present study was collected by using the following
three tools:
Tool I: Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS):
This scale was developed by Andreassen et al. (2012). This
scale aimed to assess addictive use of social media (e.g., Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, Snap chat, etc.). It is comprised 6 items. It is Likert
type scale. Participant asked to give one of the following 5 responses to
each item: 1 (Very rarely) to 5 (Very often). The total scale score.
