Abstract
The present study was carried out to monitor the synergistic effect of
systemic valacyclovir and combination of amoxicillin and metronidazole
with open flap debridement on the clinical parameters and subgingival
HCMV genomic counts in localized aggressive periodontitis patients using
TaqMan real-time PCR.
Sixteen localized aggressive periodontitis patients positive for
HCMV were selected from the Periodontology Clinic, Faculty of Dentistry,
Tanta University. Their ages ranged from 18 to 34 years. Patients were
randomly divided into two groups.
group I :
Eight patients were treated with systemic antibiotic (combination of
amoxicillin 250 mg and metronidazole 250 mg three times daily for each) for
10 days.
group II :
Eight patients were treated with systemic antiviral Valtrex (500 mg of
valacyclovir orally three times daily) + systemic antibiotic (combination of
amoxicillin 250 mg and metronidazole 250 mg three times daily for each) for
10 days.
All patients have received proper oral hygiene instructions and full
mouth scaling and root planing under local anesthesia. In addition, occlusal
adjustment was performed when indicated.
All patients were treated with open flap debridement in addition to
systemic medication which started at the same day of the open flap
debridement.
